I introduce strikes as the mirror image of a gracenote — tapping a finger down instead of lifting one up — and walk through the specific strike for every note of the scale. Low A strikes with one finger, B and C strike with two, D can go either way, and every top-hand note strikes with a single finger, with high A typically played as a thumb sweep.
I build up from basic single strikes to strikes paired with a high G gracenote, played like a doubling, and finally to triple gracenote strikes common in hornpipes. Each layer adds one more gracenote in front of the strike, building a one-two-three rhythm that becomes very recognizable in hornpipe-style tunes.
The hardest combination in the lesson, the E strike with two gracenotes, is a clear example of a move that gets worse the harder you squeeze. The fix is deliberately relaxing the hand and playing it slowly rather than forcing it.
