The old books write plenty of 6/8 tunes as if they were 4/4 with dot cuts. Scots Wha Hae in the original Green Book is a good example. Nobody plays it that way. The difference is the ratio: a dot cut is about ninety-ten, while a 6/8 is two thirds to one third.
Keep a score that matches how you actually play the tune. Rewrite the note values, mark up the typos, and keep a copy in your pipe case. It records all your work on that tune and it saves you the day your memory goes blank before you play.
