Bagpipe Ergonomics

The Short Version

The bagpipe was never designed with your body in mind, so you have to design the fit yourself. It evolved for a certain sound and look using centuries-old technology, the same way a fiddle was never designed to prevent carpal tunnel. Blowpipe length and bag size are the two adjustments that do the most to bring it into alignment with you.
A straight wrist is one of the biggest factors in comfort, dexterity, and avoiding injury. You will almost never see a bent wrist on a world-class player. It usually starts as a practice chanter habit — the thumb sitting too far back — that becomes a real liability once the bag and blowpipe are added.
Chanter rotation in the stock is a small, often-overlooked adjustment with an outsized effect. A few degrees off and you'll suddenly feel like you can't cover the high A, or your grips won't come out clean. Mark the correct rotation with a Sharpie so you can find it instantly every time.
