Haunting Melodies: Exploring Mysterious and Spooky Pipe Tunes

The Short Version

A tune's mood lives in the notes, not in the title. Plenty of pipe tunes have grim titles and cheerful music, or lovely titles attached long after the fact. If you want to know how a tune should feel, look at which notes it leans on.
Think of the nine notes of the scale as colors, and some of them are darker than others. Low A, C, D and high A come across bright. B, low G and high G sit less comfortably against the drone, and a tune built on those notes takes on that shadowed, unsettled quality.
Every note you play is really that note plus the drone. That's what makes the pipes different from a practice chanter. Low A blends almost perfectly with the drone and feels like home. B never quite settles, and a tune that keeps landing on B keeps you slightly on edge.
