I build a full set of Atherton pipes from raw sticks to a finished, tuned instrument, and show every joint, tape, and tie-in decision along the way. That includes the Dry Flow canisters, the chanter's hose-clamp attachment, drone cords, hemping, and threading the reed seats so drone reeds can never fall out.
Oiling and moisture control are not optional extras — they're what keeps wood from cracking. Dry wood that suddenly gets soaked is exactly how bagpipes split, so a thin coat of Bore Doctor and a working moisture control system protect the instrument as much as they protect your tuning.
How tight a joint should be depends entirely on what it does. Tuning slides need to move with one hand; anything going into a stock, or the bag, needs to be snug enough that a fully assembled instrument could be held upside down without a single piece moving.
