🌀 Reel Rhythm

Cut time, two beats a bar — and the one tune type that can be played fully pointed, fully round, or anywhere in between.

The Short Version

A reel lives in cut time — two beats a bar, not four. Reels are written in cut common time (2/2). Even though a bar has four quarter notes on the page, you only tap two beats: the first pair of quarter notes is beat one, the second pair is beat two.
Every reel is either pointed or round — and it changes the whole feel. Pointed (dot-cut) reels are the competition-standard sound, especially in an MSR. Round reels strip every dot-cut out for an even, driving feel closer to a jig — and there's a smooth, in-between West Coast style too.
Reels don't repeat their parts, because they're dance tunes. Like strathspeys, a reel's part lines up with a dancer's step. Play it once through and move on — that's the convention, even if nobody has a tidy explanation for why 4/4 marches follow the same rule.

⭐ Essential Highlights

“One of the most common groupings of tunes would be the March, Strathspey and Reel — that's a classic performance and competition set called the MSR. There are two styles of reel: there's the pointed reel, which has dot-cuts, or the round-style reel, which is all even notes — just like in our hornpipes, where we have the pointed and the round style. Our reels are in cut time, or cut common time, which is 2/2. So 2/2 means two beats per bar, and each beat gets a half note. Now, we don't typically have a lot of half notes in our reels, so another way to think about it is that it's like 4/4 — four quarter notes per bar — but instead of tapping out four beats, we only do two. Our first two quarter notes are a beat, and our third and fourth quarter notes are a beat. So it's two beats per bar, but four quarter notes.”▶ 30:28 · Understanding Tune Types: Marches, Strathspeys, Reels & More
“The West Coast style of reel playing is maybe slightly rounder than a full dot-cut. The way he would describe it: you have pointed, which is the full dot-cut; you have round, which is no dot-cut; and in the middle is smooth — that's what he called it. It's in between a full dot-cut and round — just the right amount of dot-cut. That's this West Coast reel style. You would also hear Iain Morrison, who was one of Alasdair's teachers in the Army, play that way, as do other people.”▶ 27:53 · Musical Masterpieces
“Something to consider, though: there's an additional challenge if you are going to go with the round style of reel — and this also goes for hornpipes. There are two styles of hornpipe: the traditional dot-cut hornpipe, or the rounded hornpipe. The challenge with playing reels or hornpipes rounded is, rhythmically, you have to get everything really even. Because if there's any unintentional difference in those even notes, it's going to sound really bad.”▶ 08:26 · August Practice Chanter Session
