🥾 4/4 March Rhythm

Four steady beats a bar — the march that shares its time signature with the strathspey, but none of its dot-cut demands.

The Short Version

A 4/4 march is four quarter-note beats per bar, played straight. Unlike a strathspey — which is also written in 4/4 — a 4/4 march mixes even eighth notes with dot-cuts and never forces every pair of notes into a dot-cut. That absence of "unrelenting dot cut" is one of the clearest ways to tell the two apart by ear or on the page.
4/4 marches don't repeat their parts. Along with strathspeys and reels, a 4/4 march is one of three tune types played straight through rather than with each part repeated — useful to know when reading a new tune or setting up a metronome app.
Precision on the beat matters more than it looks like it should. Every gracenote, doubling, and even a taorluath has an exact landing spot relative to the beat — get that placement wrong and a 4/4 march stops sounding steady, even if every note is technically correct.

⭐ Essential Highlights

“So, 4/4, which means four beats per bar — that's the top number of the 4/4. The bottom number, that four means quarter note. So you have four quarter notes in every bar. And if we were to count them out, sure enough: there's a quarter note; this dot-cut together makes a quarter note, so that's two; these two eighth notes together make a quarter note, that's three; and then these two eighth notes here make a quarter note, and that is four.”▶ 13:06 · Practice Chanter Session
“How is a strathspey similar to and different from our other pipe tunes? Well, it's 4/4. How is the strathspey different from a 4/4 march? Cabar Feidh as a 4/4 march, or Cabar Feidh as a strathspey — how are those different? What do you notice?”▶ 30:04 · Strathspey Expression: Pulsing and Pointing
“I would say technically, strathspeys are the most difficult tunes we have in terms of fingering. The reason is this unrelenting dot cut. You don't get a break. You get some quarter notes, but you don't get a break with a string of even eighth notes like you might in a 4/4 march.”▶ 40:41 · Strathspey Expression: Pulsing and Pointing
