🕓 12/8 March Rhythm

Four beats a bar, twelve eighth notes total — the rarest compound-time march, and a 6/8 in every way except the count.

The Short Version

12/8 is a 6/8 with two extra beats. Four beats per bar, each built from three eighth notes — the same math and the same feel as a 6/8 or 9/8, just with twice as many beats as a 6/8.
Composers choose 12/8 to keep the four-bar-line convention. If a melody needs more beats than a normal 6/8 line can hold, keeping it in 12/8 rather than adding extra bar lines preserves the standard four-bars-per-line, eight-bars-per-part structure.
The offbeat rule still governs everything. Whether the beat is a dotted quarter, a quarter-eighth pair, or a dot-cut triplet, the final eighth note of each three-note group has to land at exactly one third of the beat.

“If you want to fit into the pattern and follow the tradition, you need to have four bars in a line, and two lines make a part — ergo, eight bars per part. So if you happen to have written a tune that has twice as many beats in it, you make it 12/8.”▶ 23:09 ·
