The Little Spree
⚡ The Short Version
It's one of the first piobaireachds many pipers learn — five variations in total. Ground, ground doubling, a siubhal variation, a taorluath variation, and a crunluath variation. The S and D brackets in the notation mark the singling (first time through) and doubling (second time through).
This tune is fosgailte-style, so there's no conventional taorluath at all. Instead of a taorluath movement, you get a quick GDE gracenote pattern, and instead of a conventional crunluath, you get the open-style crunluath — a long theme note, a short passing note, then an edre.
The ground is built from repeating two-bar phrases, and that's how you should express it. Hold the long note at the end of each two-bar phrase. The ground doubling picks up the pace and drops those held stops, so the tune's rocking, rolling rhythm keeps building instead of pausing.
