Jimmy Blue

⚡ The Short Version

A modern round-style hornpipe from New Zealand. Jimmy Blue was written by Colin Craig, born in 1929 in New Zealand after my family emigrated from the Isle of Arran, and has become a modern classic hornpipe.

Round style means even 16th notes, not dot-cut. Unlike the traditional pointed hornpipe style, Jimmy Blue keeps its sixteenth notes even throughout — the whole challenge is staying smooth and consistent rather than adding dot-cut snap.

Strikes and birls need a light, controlled 'pop.' The many E and D strikes should sound like a light pop, similar in weight to a gracenote — too heavy and the tune sounds halting and also holds back your speed; relaxed hands are what let the birls stay fluid, with the first sound landing right on the beat.
