The Green Hills of Tyrol
⚡ The Short Version
One of the classic tunes every piper should know. The Green Hills of Tyrol is heard constantly at Highland Games, played by pipe bands and massed bands alike, and was adapted by Pipe Major John MacLeod of the 93rd Highlanders from a traditional Alpine tune.
Only three rhythmic building blocks to master. A 3/4 march with three beats per bar, the tune only uses a quarter note, a pair of even eighth notes, or a dot-and-cut pair on any given beat — keeping those two eighth-note types clearly distinct from each other is the whole game.
Watch the short-note-into-embellishment spots. The grip from B to C in bar one, the D throw in bar two, the F strike and F doubling in the second part, and the D strike movement all require holding the note before the embellishment for its full value so the movement doesn't get rushed or crushed.
