⚡ The Short Version
The whole ground runs on one rule: cut up, roll down. When the note after a short note is higher, cut that short note very short. When it's lower, roll into it gently. Get that phrasing right and the rest of the ground falls into place.
The edre is the technical heart of the tune. It's a low-A bass movement — E gracenote to low A, F gracenote to low A, then E — and it needs to stay slow, controlled, and clean. Rushing it is the most common mistake pipers make when they're new to piobaireachd.
Build steadily through the variations, then survive the crunluath a mach. Each variation should nudge the tempo up slightly. The crunluath a mach at the end is fast, dramatic, and rhythmically reversed — and it lands right when you're most tired, which is exactly why it's the real test of a piper's stamina.
