Garryowen
⚡ The Short Version
The dot almost always falls on the first note. Garryowen is a 6/8 march with six eighth notes per bar, grouped in triplets where the dot lands on the first note of each group — not the even eighth-note feel you'd hear in a 6/8 jig.
The third note of every triplet stays a plain eighth note. A common mistake is cutting both the second and third notes of a triplet; the third note gets a slight pause instead, giving the tune its swing and keeping tempo under control.
Hold the quarter note before every grip and taorluath. It's easy to rush into a grip or taorluath by anticipating the movement — stretching out the quarter note beforehand keeps the proper rhythm and swing throughout.
