Flowers of the Forest

Known as "The Lament". Flowers of the Forest is a traditional slow air commonly played at funerals and Remembrance Day occasions — if a piper is simply asked to play "the lament," this is the tune they mean.
Getting the rhythms right matters most. I spent significant time working out this setting because, in my view, every previously published version got the melody notes right but not the rhythms — this setting aims to capture how the tune has traditionally actually been played.
Short notes stay short, even in a slow air. Even though the tune is played very slowly, the sixteenth and thirty-second notes need to stay truly short and crisp so they read as quick connectors against the long, drawn-out quarter and dotted-quarter notes.
