Drops of Brandy
⚡ The Short Version
Drops of Brandy is one of the most well-known 9/8 jigs, or slip jigs, with two repeated parts. It's a fairly simple, direct tune — the real trick is keeping its rhythms consistent and controlled rather than mastering anything especially complex.
Keep the D gracenotes small and crisp so the repeating C-A-C grouping in the first part stays clean. Oversized gracenotes steal too much time from the melody note itself — keep them small, just enough to be heard, so the C never gets cut short.
Start every D throw right on the beat, never early, so it doesn't eat into the note before it. The note before a D throw — often a C — needs its full value; starting the throw early is a classic way to shortchange that preceding note.
