Don't Stop Rockin'
⚡ The Short Version
Don't Stop Rockin' is a contemporary four-parted hornpipe written by teenager Pat LePoidevin of British Columbia. I call it totally different from any tune I'd heard before — syncopated rhythms, tricky bottom- and top-hand fingering, a key change in the third part, and an exciting syncopated fourth part.
The tune uses the C natural, a note not traditionally used in pipe music. Play it with the ring finger down and the pinky lifted instead of the usual pinky-down C; on the pipes it sounds a half step lower with a noticeably darker color, and it grabs an audience's attention when it breaks into a set.
In the third part, keep every strike open and controlled so it doesn't get pointed. The E, D, G, and F strikes need the note before them to stay full-value rather than crushed — get that wrong and the round hornpipe style starts to sound clipped and uneven.
