Danny Boy
⚡ The Short Version
Danny Boy is the Irish air also known as the Londonderry Air, or the Derry Air. It's a really popular tune with Irish people, but plenty of Scots love it too, and it's often played at funerals — I get asked for it fairly often.
One section transposes the melody's high C down an octave, since the pipes can't reach that note. The highest note on the bagpipe is high A; where the song's melody climbs above that to a high C, I transpose it down low instead — it still works, and people still recognize the tune.
Written in 4/4, the tune is rhythmically simple — the real job is counting out long notes correctly and keeping a steady tempo. Once you're comfortable, tap your foot twice per bar (on beats one and three) instead of four times, and consider slowing down dramatically on the very last line for an emotional finish.
