Bagpipe Essentials Collection #30: Taorluaths
⚡ The Short Version
The taorluath is the grip plus one more gracenote. It's the same two low G's with a D gracenote in between, but with an E gracenote added onto the final note — so the whole movement builds directly on the grip that came before it in the series.
Most taorluaths end on low A, but some end on B or C. Those two variations together make up less than about 5% of the taorluaths pipers will encounter, and the movement itself — two low G's, D gracenote, E gracenote — stays identical no matter which final note it lands on.
The taorluath from D uses a B gracenote instead of a D gracenote. This is a special case that doesn't follow the usual pattern — historically unexplained, but a fixture pipers just have to learn when they hit it in a tune.
