Bagpipe Essentials Collection #29: Grips

The Short Version

A grip is two low G's separated by a tiny D gracenote. That's the whole movement — but what makes it so universal is that almost any note can sit on either side of it, going up, going down, or repeating the same note.
The two low G's need to be equal in length. Equal length gives the grip its characteristic triplet sound; the D gracenote itself is always tiny, whether the surrounding low G's are played slow or fast.
The grip lands just before the beat, so the note after it lands on the beat. As the grip speeds up and compresses, the note before it can stretch out longer so the grip still finishes in the same place, right before the beat.
