Bagpipe Essentials Collection #28: D Throws

The Short Version

The D throw is low G, a D gracenote to C, then D — and only the D gracenote is a true gracenote. The low G and the C written before it look like gracenotes on the page, but they're solid, full notes; the D gracenote is the only truly tiny one in the movement.
There are two styles: light (open) and heavy. The light D throw — the one I was taught and teach — has no extra note; the heavy D throw adds an extra D-gracenote-back-to-low-G before the plain C and D, giving it a slightly fuller sound.
The low G of the D throw belongs right on the beat. Not early, not late — landing it exactly on the beat is what makes D throws line up in unison in a pipe band setting.
