Bagpipe Essentials Collection #26: High A Doublings
⚡ The Short Version
The high A doubling is simple: play high A, then sweep the thumb. I prefer a downward sweep of the thumb over tapping or sweeping up — I find it easier, quicker, and cleaner.
You only need enough high A to hear it. It doesn't need to be big and open — the goal is a clear, audible high A, not an exaggerated one.
Keep the thumb close to the chanter and the resting grip relaxed. Leaning or pushing hard with the thumb in the resting position makes it harder to lift it off cleanly for the doubling.
