Bagpipe Essentials Collection #8: High G Gracenotes

The Short Version

Gracenotes make up for what the bagpipe can't do: change volume or pause. Since the pipes play at one continuous volume with no rests, gracenotes let a piper emphasize a note and separate repeated notes, and combinations of gracenotes build every embellishment — doublings, grips, taorluaths, birls, and more.
The high G gracenote can be played on any note lower than F. It can't go on high G itself (the finger's already up) or on high A, since a gracenote always has to be higher-pitched than the note it's played on.
Keep gracenotes really tiny, and keep the hands loose. Big gracenotes sound sloppy and imprecise and make it harder to play clean and fast — the goal is small and relaxed, not tight and squeezed.
