Bagpipe Essentials Collection #7: Crossing Noises
⚡ The Short Version
D to E is the trickiest transition on the scale. Four or five fingers move at once — on the top hand you just drop the ring finger, but on the bottom hand every finger switches places simultaneously.
A crossing noise happens when fingers drop before they lift. It's an extra little blip sound — usually a flash of low G — caused by fingers coming down before the fingers that need to lift have finished lifting.
The fix is always the same order: raise first, then drop. Raise every finger that needs to be raised before dropping the fingers that need to be dropped, even though it happens in a split second — this trades a brief, inaudible false fingering for a clean transition instead of an audible crossing noise.
