Bagpipe Essentials Collection #6: Top Hand Notes
⚡ The Short Version
The top four notes of the scale run E, F, high G, high A. While playing them, the bottom hand stays locked in low-A position (everything covered except the pinky up) the whole time — that consistency matters for clean intonation.
A finger left up on the bottom hand while playing a top-hand note is a false fingering. The note itself doesn't change, but the intonation does, and it's visually obvious to anyone watching that the fingering is wrong.
Keep the hands relaxed and close to the chanter — don't lift high. Anything more than about an inch or three-quarters of an inch of lift is wasted movement; the top players in the world play clean and fast because their finger movements are efficient, not exaggerated.
