Bagpipe Essentials Collection #2: Your Practice Chanter

The Short Version

The practice chanter has three parts. The top (for blowing through and covering the reed), the bottom (with the finger holes), and the reed, which needs to sit firmly and snugly in the reed seat.
A loose joint gets fixed with hemp or waxed dental floss. I prefer waxed dental floss over hemp because it's waxy, doesn't absorb moisture the way natural hemp fiber does, and won't cycle between too tight and too loose.
Listen for a clear tone, not too soft and not too hard. Blow too softly and the reed won't kick in cleanly; blow too hard and the practice chanter reed can shut off completely — the opposite problem from the big pipes, where under-blowing is what causes a chanter reed to cut out.
