Why (and how) you should wash your drone reeds.

⚡ The Short Version

Unsteady or shutting-off drone reeds are often just dirty, not miscalibrated. If your chanter reed pressure hasn't changed, there's usually no reason to move the bridle — the real culprit is residue building up under the tongue.

Most synthetic reeds can be taken apart, cleaned with warm water and a little hand soap, and put back together. The key is marking the bridle position first with a fine-tip marker so you can return everything to exactly where it was.

Ezeedrone is the one popular reed you generally can't get into, since its bridle is glued in place. For pipers playing at a high level, replacing a set every year or so is a reasonable cost of doing business with that design.
