Drone valves are a fairly recent invention that clean up your starts and stops. Unlike the one-way blowpipe valve, a drone valve stays shut until a certain bag pressure builds, which eliminates the squeaky sound on strike-in and the trailing drone on a cutoff.
They also smooth out the natural fluctuations in your bag pressure, making your drones steadier. Since every human blower has small ups and downs in pressure, restricting the air into the drone reduces how much of that fluctuation the reed actually feels.
I think of drone valves as training wheels — useful, but not a replacement for developing real blowing skill. They can really help mask an unsteady blower or a less-than-ideal set of drone reeds, but it's still worth working on clean starts and stops and steady pressure on your own.
