The Stronger Fitter Piper #9: Forearm Strength (HD Video)

The Short Version

This episode of the Stronger Fitter Piper series focuses on forearm strength and preventing tennis elbow. Trainer John explains that lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, can come from any repetitive motion, bagpiping included, not just tennis.
A simple homemade roller — PVC pipe, a length of clothesline, and a weight — is nearly free and does the job. Rolling the weight up and letting it back down works both the release motion that helps an existing injury and the strengthening motion that helps prevent one.
You can target the flexors or the extensors of the forearm just by changing which side of the roller the cord comes off. Fifteen to thirty repetitions, a couple of sets, a few times a week, spent as little as two to five minutes a day, is enough to see relief and build strength.
