The Stronger Fitter Piper #3: Shoulders and Arms (HD Video)

The Short Version

Trainer John covers stretches for the upper body and explains thoracic outlet syndrome, a circulation or nerve impingement issue near the collarbone. It can show up as numbness or tingling in the hands or arms, often linked to repetitive motion — typing, or playing the pipes — and John shows a couple of simple ways to check for it.
A simple wall press stretch doubles as both a good warm-up and a quick self-check for that impingement. Press your palm firmly against a wall with the arm fully extended, turn your head, and hold — if you feel numbness or tingling, it's worth mentioning to a doctor.
Two more stretches target the back of the shoulder and the triceps, both easy to do before or after playing. Cradling one arm across the body targets the shoulder and tricep, while reaching overhead and down the back targets the tricep on the other side.
