The Stronger Fitter Piper #12: Core and Balance Training (HD Video)

The Short Version

Balance training is worth starting at any age, not just later in life. Trainer John points out that even young pipers benefit from working on balance now, since it's a surprisingly challenging skill that also stabilizes every other exercise you do.
A single-leg shoulder press turns a familiar exercise into a full-body balance challenge. You'll need less weight than usual, but you'll feel far more work through the core and lower leg than a standard, two-footed shoulder press.
A fit ball adds horizontal and kneeling balance work you can build up gradually. Start with your elbows on the ball for a plank-style hold, and only progress toward kneeling on the ball once you can do it safely near something stable to hold onto.
