The Dot-Cut

The Short Version

The time signature tells you everything about how to read the rhythms in a tune. The top number gives you beats per bar, and the bottom number tells you what kind of note gets one beat — it never means anything else.
Piping dot cuts are far more extreme than a standard dotted rhythm in written music. In normal notation a dot adds half the note's value, but in piping we hold the long note almost the entire beat and make the short note as brief as possible.
The most common note I give my students is simply: more dot cut. Pipers naturally round out the rhythm to keep their technique clean, but the goal is to do both — hold the dot and keep the grip or doubling crisp.
