The Birl

The Short Version

A birl is just a low A with two quick low G taps — the trick is doing those taps consistently at speed. I show you several styles pipers use, but the note after a birl is always low A, and the note before it can be anything on the scale.
My recommended style is the seven, because its timing is built into the mechanics of the movement, not into how hard you tap. Instead of tapping twice, I slide my little finger down the chanter and pull back up across the hole — that slide-and-pull motion gives me the same timing every time.
The seven style is also what lets me play clean birls from B and from C. Bringing the little finger down at the same moment as the ring finger, instead of afterward, removes an extra step and makes birls from B far more reliable once you're past the basics.
