What looks like a doubling followed by a gracenote in strathspey sheet music is often actually a triplet. A C doubling on a short, cut C followed by a gracenote to a lower note is really a GDE triplet played short-short-long — the notation is misleading if you play it literally.
The two short notes of a strathspey triplet must be exactly equal in length, and really short. Cut the short notes hard so the theme note of the doubling and the note that follows are the identical, tiny length — that's what creates the true triplet sound, not the doubling-plus-single-note reading.
Each note of the triplet gets its own gracenote, forming a GDE pattern that alternates hands and fingers. High G with the top-hand pointer, D with the bottom-hand pointer, E with the top-hand ring finger — alternating like this lets you play the three gracenotes fast without ever doubling up the same finger.
