Should you oil your pipes?

The Short Version

My opinion on oiling pipes has changed after years of not doing it. I went a long time without oiling my pipes on the advice I'd received, and never had a crack — but my pipe maker Dave Atherton has since made a compelling case for oiling that changed my mind.
Bore Doctor is my preferred oil because it's thin and mostly evaporates rather than leaving goop. I've also used almond oil, which is a little thicker, but either way you want a very thin coating rather than a heavy application.
You don't need fancy equipment — basic cotton brushes in a thin and a wide size will do the job. I also like using a gun cleaning kit with a plastic-coated rod and screw-on tips, an idea I picked up years ago from my first piping teacher, Colin MacKenzie.
