Pipes up! How to get your pipes up the professional way.

The Short Version

Pipes down means the base drone sits parallel to the ground, held with individual finger control. The base drone, blowpipe, and chanter are held in separate fingers rather than bunched together, so you're ready to move cleanly on command.
Bringing the pipes up is a set sequence: grab the chanter from the bottom, then bring the drone and blowpipe up while the chanter stays down. You never bring the chanter up early — it stays in place until the very last step, when both hands finally come together on it.
You move in sync with the pipe major, not before them. Whether you're waiting at ease or walking up to the competition line, you hold your position and your focus until the pipe major actually calls or moves.
