Before I ever play a note of a new tune, I go through it with colored highlighters. I look for two-bar phrases that repeat within the tune and mark each repeating phrase in its own color, starting with the closing bars of each part.
I use pink for an 'exception to the rule' — a phrase that's almost the same but not quite. If a phrase repeats except for one different note, I mark it as the same color and flag the different note in pink rather than treating it as a whole new phrase.
Highlighting shows you exactly where to focus your practice time. Phrases that repeat several times in a tune get plenty of reps just by playing it through, but phrases that appear only once need extra attention to catch up.
