Practice Chanter Power Hour — September 10, 2025

The Short Version

A 6/8 has two beats per bar, not six, and only four rhythms in it. Once you see that the bottom number of a compound time signature can't name the beat, you divide the top number by three and the whole thing stops being mysterious. A 6/8 march only ever uses a dotted quarter, a quarter plus eighth, and the two dot-cut triplets.
Every beat in a 6/8 march ends on the same eighth note offbeat. That is why the quarter-note-plus-eighth-note setting on the Piper's Metronome works so well for these tunes. Land on the beat, land on that offbeat, and keep your short notes short, and the tune sounds right.
Learn the rhythm before you learn the fingers. Playing a new tune as a sequence of notes and doublings with no beat imprints the wrong thing. Slow it down, shrink the section, strip out the embellishments, then layer them back in one at a time.
