Masterpieces in Miniature

The Short Version

Two-parted 2/4 marches are overlooked masterpieces. Competition culture pushes everyone toward four-parted tunes, so gems like the Sweet Maid of Glendaruel, the Drunken Piper, and the Weary Maid get left behind. String several together and you have a set with real variety.
Read a tune's rhythm density before you learn it. Count the notes per beat: ones and twos mean rhythmically simple; threes and fours mean harder to play and harder to get up to speed. Match complexity when you build a set, because everything has to sit at one tempo.
Hold every dot until it hurts and really cut every cut. I argue there are no true 16th notes in piping — every dotted pattern is really a 32nd-note cut. Whatever the page says, stretch the dots and snap the cuts.
