Practice Chanter Workout Session — March 8, 2023

The Short Version

Cut time and 2/4 sound identical — the only real difference is notation. Cut common time (2/2) is reserved for reels, and reels are defined by not repeating their 8-bar parts. You can't tell 2/2 from 2/4 by ear; you can only tell a reel from a hornpipe by whether the parts repeat.
There's no single correct D throw — light and heavy are both legitimate. A survey of great pipers' recordings comes out close to fifty-fifty. Pick one and be consistent, though modern piobaireachd convention is almost always light.
In a pipe band, timing the low G together beats making it sound perfect. Nobody can hear light versus heavy D throw once a whole band is playing, but an early or oversized low G stands out immediately. Unison in timing matters more than technical polish.
