Irish Tunes — March 3, 2025

The Short Version

Irish tunes let you breathe a bit more than Scottish ones do. We like things symmetrical and organized in twos, fours and eights. A lot of Irish melodies wander, sit in odd structures, or refuse to end properly so they roll straight into the next tune.
A short note on the beat is the single hardest habit to fix. In Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore that cut D wants to sneak in ahead of the beat. Lengthen it, anchor it on the click, then shorten it again while keeping it exactly where it belongs.
If you're piping outdoors in March, dress and equip for it properly. Layers under the shirt, stick-on body warmers, hand warmers, a moisture control system with fresh canisters, the chanter tucked inside your jacket, and if you can, a plastic set instead of your good wood pipes.
