Get the Pipes Out! — June 25, 2024

The Short Version

The pipe band attack is really two separate motions, not one. Striking the bag and pushing it up are two distinct steps — skipping the strike and treating it as one motion is the single most common mistake pipers make when starting up with a band.
Every move in the attack lines up with a breath. A full inhale sets up the strike into the drones, and a second full inhale sets up the E — then you keep blowing through the entire E note so the reed settles at the right pressure instead of going sharp or flat.
Nail the sequence alone before you ever add tempo. Practice the hand moves, the strike-and-push, and the breathing separately and slowly at home first. Only once each step is consistent on its own should you add a relaxed beat, then a real tempo, then marching.
