Practice Chanter Session II — February 29, 2024

The Short Version

Grip and taorluath are the only two embellishments in the whole system that start ahead of the beat. Everything else — doublings, birls, D throws, all your gracenotes — starts on the beat. If you learn nothing else from this session, learn that one rule.
Any grip that starts on D always takes a B gracenote instead of the usual D gracenote. That same B gracenote is what gives the rodin (a grip down to low A) its bigger, looser, more open sound.
Relaxed hands beat forceful ones, every time. Crossing noises and sluggish grips almost always trace back to squeezing the chanter. Aim for the minimum pressure needed to close the hole, not the maximum.
