A D throw lives or dies on a clean low G. Heavy or light, fast or slow, the throw has to start with a clear, on-time low G. A rushed or fuzzy low G is the most common flaw I hear in student recordings.
Doublings from high A and high G lose their first gracenote. You physically cannot play a gracenote lower than the note you are coming from. From high A the first gracenote disappears; from high G it either disappears too or gets replaced by a tiny thumb gracenote.
Thumb position quietly drives your whole bottom hand. Resting the thumb between the middle and ring finger lets it pinch-assist the fingers evenly. Too high, and the chanter wobbles, the pinch gets harder, and bottom-hand embellishments get sloppy.
