Practice Chanter Workout (Playing Clean and Fast) — July 17, 2023

The Short Version

Playing fast is a brain problem, not a finger problem. Your fingers already have the physical ability to move quickly and lightly. The real bottleneck is your brain keeping up with what note is coming next.
Interval speed training gets you to tempo faster than the old slow-and-gradual method. Instead of learning a tune slow and correct and inching the metronome up for weeks, play short bursts with pauses between them, then shrink the pauses. This trains your hands to relax and move quickly from day one.
Good form is what lets speed and cleanliness coexist. Tight, stiff hands can fake it at slow tempos but hit a ceiling. Keeping your fingers light and close to the chanter from the start is what lets the same clean technique survive at speed.
