I landed on the front page of the New York Times on January 11, 2012, for teaching bagpipe lessons over Skype. The article, headlined 'With enough bandwidth, many join the band,' featured my student Dr. John McClure practicing in Minnesota while I taught remotely from Seattle.
Online lessons remove the geography limit that used to define music teaching. Instead of pulling students only from your neighborhood, a teacher who works online can connect with students anywhere in the world, and students can find great instruction no matter where they live.
I actually pioneered bagpipe video lessons nearly a decade earlier, in 2003. Using Apple's early FireWire webcam and AOL Instant Messenger video chat, I and my teacher Mike Cusack in Houston did what I believe was the world's first bagpipe internet video lesson — with me as the student.
