The trick to changing tape is a marker piece, so you never lose your fine tuning. Instead of stripping every hole and starting from scratch, I cover the old tape with a marker piece first so the new tape goes back in exactly the same spot.
Don't use chemical solvents on your chanter to clean off old adhesive gunk. A bit of electrical tape or clear packing tape pressed onto the sticky residue and pulled off does the job without risking the finish, especially on a wood chanter.
How far you wrap the tape around the chanter is a personal choice, not just a tuning one. I double it up on the back but keep it single around the front so I never have to unwind it twice under time pressure, and I keep tape off the wood where my thumb rests.
