How to achieve a world-class bagpipe sound (Part 3: Your Chanter)

The Short Version

The position of the reed in the reed seat is your rough tuning — it balances high A against low A. Pushing the reed in shortens the distance to the top hand and sharpens high A; pulling it out lengthens that distance and flattens it, while low A barely moves.
Tape only works in one direction: it can only flatten a note, never sharpen it. Tape lengthens the distance from the reed to where the air escapes, which lowers pitch — so if a note is flat, the fix is to sink the reed sharper overall and then tape down whatever else went sharp.
A standard equal-temperament tuner won't tell you the truth about a bagpipe chanter. Because the intervals between notes on our scale aren't evenly spaced like a guitar or piano, you need a bagpipe-specific tuner calibrated to your own low A to tune the rest of the scale accurately.
