Technique lives in the hands and fingers, tone comes from the body and your equipment, musical expression comes from the heart and mind, and performance psychology ties it all together — my content and lessons map onto these four areas.
BagpipeLessons.com started as the world's first website dedicated to bagpipe instruction in 1999, and the first-ever online video bagpipe lesson happened in 2003. I bought two of Apple's first iSight webcams and mailed one to my mentor Mike Cusack in Houston so they could do a lesson over video — years before Skype or Zoom existed.
Better equipment has extended competitive careers the same way better gear has extended professional athletes' careers. Piping legend Willie McCallum told me that in the days of sheepskin bags and cane drone reeds, you could burn four days of practice time just fighting your gear before playing a single tune — modern synthetic gear frees up that time for actual practice.
