Creating Custom Practice Drills

The Short Version

A drill's job is to add rungs to the ladder. When a passage keeps failing, the answer isn't 10,000 more attempts at full speed — it's smaller steps. Slow it down, narrow the scope to a few notes, simplify the rhythm, then layer the difficulty back in one element at a time.
Diagnose before you drill: technique, timing, or context. Every tricky spot fails for a reason. Isolate the embellishment first — your grips, taorluaths, and bubbly notes should be playable 50 times in a row — then rebuild the notes and rhythm around it as their own drill.
Form beats correctness while you're learning. Tight hands kill short notes and quick embellishments. At the drill stage, keeping the hands loose and maintaining proper form matters more than nailing every note.
