The Stronger Fitter Piper

The Short Version

This is the first episode of the Stronger Fitter Piper series with Trainer John. It targets a common bagpiper imbalance: strong front-of-shoulder and bicep muscles from playing, with a weaker back and posterior chain.
A simple opposite arm-and-leg raise, done on the floor, builds strength through the back and shoulders. You bring the knees under the hips and hands under the shoulders, then extend the opposite arm and leg out fully before bringing them back in.
A follow-up low-back exercise, lying flat and raising the arms and legs together, builds core and low-back endurance. Holding that raised position, and eventually alternating arms and legs, adds strength in areas bagpipers tend not to train in the gym.
